    Supply Chain Management in the Hospitality Industry: A research agenda

    Supply Chain Management is at the heart of competitive advantage for any organisation. Without Supply Chains, the Hospitality Industry would quickly grind to a halt. There would be no fruit or vegetables in our restaurants, no beer or wine in our bars and no beds or toilets in our hotels. There would be no recycling of glass or the disposal of food products. There would be no customers. Given the importance of Supply Chains to the Hospitality Industry it is perhaps surprising that so little is published about Supply Chains and how Supply Chains can be managed. The aim of this working paper is to define SCM and establish an agenda for undertaking research into this important but neglected topic

    Many developing countries wish to become the ‘gateway’ to a region or part of a continent.One strategy involves encouraging logistics cluster development. These hubs support global supply chains and may enable the economic growth of the host country through the resulting trade, as well as providing direct and indirect employment opportunities during the build and subsequent operation of the hub. Namibia intends to develop the Port of Walvis Bay to be come the preferred gateway to southern Africa and the Southern African Development Community region. This article builds on research on Caribbean cluster potential and Namibian logistics to identify the potential benefits and impact on development, as well as the drawbacks and risks of such a strategy

    Mentoring and Coaching in Transport and Logistics Higher Education: Issues and Challenges

    Mentoring is widely accepted as a developmental process for personal growth and career advancement. Its functions are often carried out within the context of a long-term, continuous and supportive relationship between a skilled or more experienced person (mentor) who serves as a role model to teach, sponsor, encourage and counsel and a less experienced individual (mentee). Although some evidence exists to support the idea that, where mentoring practices are applied in higher education, students tend to perform better as scholars and experience higher confidence and morale, mentoring is still under-utilised when used as a way to help support individuals’ personal and professional development. Meanwhile, larger organisations tend to invest significant resources on talent management activities, as a means to identify how such activities are being utilised to develop current assets within organisations, develop leadership, support change or bridge the gap of insufficiently qualified graduates in industry. This paper presents a structured literature review on mentoring and coaching including similarities and differences in each approach and their appropriateness in transport and logistics higher education. It provides an understanding of each concept and suggests relevant applications as an effective means of maximising the potential of existing and prospective students and employees. Finally, it discusses the extent to which “mentoring and coaching” can be used in transport and logistics higher education as a developmental approach to provide students with a competitive edge when entering the workplace

    Australian perspective regarding recommendations for physical activity and exercise rehabilitation in pulmonary arterial hypertension

    Aim: To determine the opinion of health care professionals within Australia, regarding acceptable levels of exertion and symptoms, and referral for exercise rehabilitation in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Method: In 2010, 76 health care professionals at a specialist pulmonary hypertension meeting in Australia were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire included case studies of patients with PAH in World Health Organization (WHO) functional classes II–IV. For each case study, respondents were asked to report their opinion regarding the acceptable level of exertion and symptoms during daily activities, and whether they would refer the patient for exercise rehabilitation. Three additional questions asked about advice in relation to four specific physical activities. Results: The response rate was 70% (n = 53). Overall, 58% of respondents recommended patients undertake daily activities 'as tolerated'. There was no consensus regarding acceptable levels of breathlessness or fatigue, but the majority of respondents considered patients should have no chest pain (73%) and no more than mild light-headedness (92%) during daily activities. Overall, 63% of respondents would have referred patients for exercise rehabilitation. There was little difference in opinion regarding the acceptable level of exertion or symptoms, or referral for exercise rehabilitation, according to functional class. However, the patients' functional class did influence the advice given regarding the specific physical activities. Conclusion: In 2010, there were inconsistencies between individual health care professionals within Australia regarding appropriate levels of physical exertion and acceptable symptoms during daily activities.     Metal pollution as a potential threat to shell strength and survival in marine bivalves

    Marine bivalve molluscs, such as scallops, mussels and oysters, are crucial components of coastal ecosystems, providing a range of ecosystem services, including a quarter of the world’s seafood. Unfortunately, due to human activity, coastal marine areas often suffer from metal contamination. We establish that increased levels of metal pollution (zinc, copper and lead) in sediments near the Isle of Man, resulting from historical mining, strongly correlate with significant weakening of shell strength in king scallops, Pecten maximus. This weakness increases mortality during fishing and leaves individuals more exposed to predation. Comparative structural analysis revealed that shells from the contaminated area were thinner and exhibited a pronounced mineralisation disruption parallel to the shell surface within the foliated region of both the top and bottom valves. Our data suggest that these disruptions caused reduced fracture strength and hence increased mortality, even at subcritical contamination levels with respect to current international standards. This hitherto unreported effect is important since such non-apical responses rarely feed into environmental quality assessments, with significant implications for population survival. Hence, our findings highlight the impact of metal pollution on shell mineralisation in bivalves, and urge a reappraisal of currently accepted critical contamination levels

    Additional experimental evidence for a solar influence on nuclear decay rates

    Additional experimental evidence is presented in support of the recent hypothesis that a possible solar influence could explain fluctuations observed in the measured decay rates of some isotopes. These data were obtained during routine weekly calibrations of an instrument used for radiological safety at The Ohio State University Research Reactor using Cl-36. The detector system used was based on a Geiger-Mueller gas detector, which is a robust detector system with very low susceptibility to environmental changes. A clear annual variation is evident in the data, with a maximum relative count rate observed in January/February, and a minimum relative count rate observed in July/August, for seven successive years from July 2005 to June 2011. This annual variation is not likely to have arisen from changes in the detector surroundings, as we show here.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    LHS6343C: A Transiting Field Brown Dwarf Discovered by the Kepler Mission

    We report the discovery of a brown dwarf that transits one member of the M+M binary system LHS6343AB every 12.71 days. The transits were discovered using photometric data from the Kelper public data release. The LHS6343 stellar system was previously identified as a single high-proper-motion M dwarf. We use high-contrast imaging to resolve the system into two low-mass stars with masses 0.45 Msun and 0.36 Msun, respectively, and a projected separation of 55 arcsec. High-resolution spectroscopy shows that the more massive component undergoes Doppler variations consistent with Keplerian motion, with a period equal to the transit period and an amplitude consistent with a companion mass of M_C = 62.8 +/- 2.3 Mjup. Based on an analysis of the Kepler light curve we estimate the radius of the companion to be R_C = 0.832 +/- 0.021 Rjup, which is consistent with theoretical predictions of the radius of a > 1 Gyr brown dwarf.Comment: Our previous analysis neglected the dependence of the scaled semimajor axis, a/R, on the transit depth. By not correcting a/R for the third-light contamination, we overestimated the mass of Star A, which led to an overestimate the mass and radius of the LHS6343
